A Lesson from the Garbage Man

As I was sitting at my desk checking my email this morning, I heard the garbage truck pull up to collect our trash. I looked out the window and saw the men, bundled up because of the cold, doing their job. I am thankful for those who do those seemingly thankless jobs – especially in the cold of winter and heat of summer.
Reminded me of the verses in I Corinthians 12 that talk about how believers, being part of the body, have different jobs to do. It is easy to get jealous if someone else is doing the job we want or to get proud of something we can do.  Sometimes we just get tired of doing our job. But just think of the mess that would happen (and does happen!) when we don’t do what we were created to do.
“But in fact, God has arranged the parts in the body,
every one of them,
just as He wanted them to be.”
(I Cor. 12:18)
I’ll be honest… when I am struggling with my role this reminder is an irritant. It should be a kick in the pants to get back into alignment with the rest of the body - because I have seen the beauty that comes when we work in harmony in how we were created to move.
It is sinful, icky pride in my heart that makes me think I can orchestrate how things should be when I can’t even see past the end of my nose. It doesn’t take too long after I try and take over for the Creator to lovingly (and sometimes painfully) get me back on track. After I acknowledge I am not the one in charge and agree that God has placed everyone “just as He wanted them to be…” I can get back to my job.
The incredible thing is that God’s love and mercy and grace have allowed me to experience the joy that comes from being content in my role.
And when I am content, it frees me up to do my job.
And being freed up to do my job gives me the pleasure of serving Him.
And serving Him allows my heart to be grateful to the Creator
for how He made me and the gifts He has given me.
Which then just gets me pumped to keep doing my job!!
                                                            Pretty awesome how that works!
